But Mommy…..

But Mommy.....My oldest daughter is a gem, she is truly, and I am not just saying that because I am extremly biased. I often get told how funny, entertaining, sweet etc. etc. she is but I just have to get something off my chest and what better place to vent then on a mommy blog.

I am not sure exactly when it happened but my daughter has taken to saying, “But Mommmmmyyyy…..” why can’t I do this or why can’t I do that. This has to be one of the most annoying things ever! I am not sure why it bothers me so much but it does and all my efforts to get her to stop saying this prove futile.

The second most annoying thing that comes out of her mouth and is something that comes out right after “but mommy” is anything with, “I want!” “But Mommy, I want some juice, I want to want to watch TV, I want to make crafts, I want, I want, I want!!!” Ahhhhh, so annoying. My husband and I have been at her constantly to say please and if she doesn’t say please and ask nicely she doesn’t get it but sometimes I do forget to tell the, “I want monster” to say please and I can’t exactly get mad at her after the fact, now can I.

Shopping at the grocery store yesterday she stopped by a display of chocolate eggs and proceeded to do the, “Can I get this, but mommy, I want one etc.” She never used to do this. When we were out at stores we could even go to the toy section without her asking for something but suddenly all that has changed. Thankfully, she doesn’t go into a complete meltdown and pull a temper tantrum like I have seen some kids do, guess she knows better than that, but this new behaviour still irks me.

Speaking with some mothers the other day we were discussing phrases that their children had picked up from their peers and I wonder if, “but Mommy” is one of them? Or maybe it’s something she has come to all by herself. Either way, I am not going down without a fight in the “but Mommy wars”. They say you should pick your battles and this is one of them.

I will prevail, oh yes, I will prevail.

Of course, if she switches gears and starts saying, “but Dadddyyyy” well, then… he’s on his own :)
